Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Part of &Beyond’s luxurious lodge portfolio, Benguerra Island is a beautiful beachfront option on the shores of the Indian Ocean. Surrounded by pristine sandy beaches and unspoiled coral reefs, the lodge provides a wonderful base from which to explore this tropical island paradise.

The lodge itself offers stylish, rustic luxury, with a large thatched central area complete with a comfortable lounge bar and pretty dining room area. Rooms

Benguerra Island offers an intimate number of beautiful Casinhas and Cabanas, as well as the Casa de Familia Villa. All are shaded by milkwood trees and overlook the sandy shores.

The Casinhas are slightly raised on wooden platforms and have a large room with a king sized bed complete with muslin nets. The open plan en suite bathrooms feature baths and outdoor showers, and each Casinha boasts its own private plunge pool and extended wooden deck, furnished with a table and shaded chairs along with two wooden loungers. From here, you can step directly onto the sandy beach, where thick towels are provided for your private thatched sun shade and wooden beach loungers.

The Cabanas are just slightly smaller in size, but are cosy featuring a bath, indoor and outdoor shower and plunge pool. For a real treat, or for families or friends travelling together, the Casa de Familia Villa offers a master bedroom along with two additional en suite bedrooms. It also boasts a private lounge, dining area and pool with a deck and garden. Guests in the villa can enjoy the additional benefit of having their own private chef throughout their stay.

Location

Situated on the largest island within Mozambique’s beautiful Bazaruto Archipelago, the lodge is nestled right in the heart of a marine conservation area, overlooking a sandy beach and deep lagoon. The snorkelling and diving here is superb, while the island itself boasts a lush interior of forest, wetland and freshwater lakes, as well as the dramatic sand-dunes which the area is renowned for.

Food and drink

The food at Benguerra is superb, with fresh crayfish and other seafood delicacies often on the menu.

Families

The Casa de Familia Villa accommodates four adults and up to four children. For smaller family groups, the Casinhas can be converted into a triple room for two adults and one child under the age of 12.

Facilities and activities

Activities at Benguerra include traditional dhow cruises, island walks, local village tours, birdwatching, sea kayaking and cast-away picnics. You can also explore the miles of unspoilt coral reefs on diving or snorkelling trips, or go deep-sea fishing. Horse riding can be arranged on the island, or if you prefer something more low-key, a range of pampering treatments are available at the lodge’s spa.
